Invitation to the working celebration of:

FRAKCIJA - 10 YEARS

hrvatska verzija

In collaboration with Culture of Change, Student Center, Zagreb.

24.-26. November & 06.-10. December 2006

Frakcija Magazine for Performing Arts marks its tenth anniversary this year. The program includes: a mini festival of productions by authors who have formed the vision of new theater in Croatia in the past decade; a book promotion; dramaturgy coaching sessions; lectures by Jon McKenzie, Bojana Cvejić and Emil Hrvatin.

We kick off the program marking the 10th anniversary of Frakcija Magazine for Performing Arts in November 2006 with three productions by Zagreb's younger generation of dance authors, authors whose work has integrated a research-oriented and reflective approach to choreography and performance. The three productions have all gone through a process that has included showing of different stages of the works.

Oliver Frljić & Zrinka Užbinec
The Importance of Having a Concept
(work-in-progress)

Concept and direction: Oliver Frljić
Performed by: Zrinka Užbinec and Oliver Frljić
Production: Center for Drama Art

The production relates to its earlier version and its problematic framework. It takes as its starting point the kind of performing artists' solidarity that is a result of the experience of working on the first version. It explores performance politics that are the product of the absence of the problematic framework that generated the first version. This approach emphasizes representative modes of solidarity.

The project Solo : Cycle , is a choreographical essay which refers to different aspects of the phenomena of artistic work in the medium of dance and choreography. In collaboration with: Culture of Change, Student Center, Zagreb
Realized through the working platform EkS-scena
www.sodaberg.hr

In the second research phase authors Marjana Krajač, Selma Banich and architect Filip Tadin use the methods of the deconstruction of the Verdi's opera material developed in the first phase to create a new platform for the further research. The figure/two figures of lady Macbeth take a central role in the reinventing the space – fictional and real - where the possible story of Macbeth could have taken place. Building from her death once again, the figure of lady Macbeth becomes an archetype – immortal figure which materializes itself at different places and in different times but always going through the same events – reliving her story over and over again.

The pivot of the program will happen 06.-10. December with performances of new productions:  Bobo Jelč/Nataša Rajković: Other Side, Branko Brezovec W&T, Damira Bartola Indoš Vilovanje, Ivica Buljan Block, BADco. J. Lacoste / F. Paravidino: BLOCK

Directed by: Ivica Buljan

J. Lacoste: COMMENT FAIRE UN BLOC

Performers: Sven Jakir, Rona Žulj, Miran Kurspahić, George Stanciu, Hrvoslava Brkušić & Tigrova mast: Niko Potočnjak, Bruno Motik, Tvrtko Dujmović

F. Paravidino: GENOA 01

Performers: Darko Japelj, Miro Manojlović, Bruno Motik

Production: SC -Theatre &TD – Culture of Culture; Co-production: New Theatre, Zadar Snova, AWL Dubrovnik

Ivica Buljan consecutively stages two plays by two contemporary young playwrights Joris Lacoste and Faust Paravidino under the joint title BLOCK, interrelating them thematically by questioning the modes, forms and experiences of the individual in today's globalised society.
Genoa 01 offers the testaments of the participants of the antiglobalization protest during the G8 summit in Genoa in the spring of 2001, marking the course of the police repression that resulted in the death of twenty year old local Carlo Giuliani who was killed by Carabinieri. The play is structured by the voices of the people who retell, evoke, comment on the events. This is documentary theatre that evades fiction and relays on precisely described events.
COMMENT FAIRE UN BLOC stages five anonymous speakers, marked by code initials, who alternately speak, without a predefined order, complete each others sentences or correct them, introduce new data, sometimes delude. This addressing of the audience by five unrelated speeches attempts to create relations of community. In that case, it becomes a performance, conference, entertainment, confusion... a realisation of a poetic act.

Vilim Matula
Point

Concept and performed by: Vilim Matula

With this performance Vilim Matula researches the performative "punctuation" of the social: the extrovert code that we recognise as unvoiced moods, opinions, loyalties, animosities, closeness, resistance, passions, fears, intentions. The subtext. The "in between lines". The constant, inevitable reliance on another: the lover, the technician, but also the echolocation of complete strangers, as well as close friends. The Point is an intersection of intimate, as well as public, circling around the unreachable directness. Clarity. Precision.

Oliver Frljić
The Misses Rice, long before geopolitics there was music

Directed and conceived by: Oliver Frljić
Performed by: Ana Karić, Nataša Dangubić and Nina Violić
Music: Damir Šimunović
Costumes: Zorana Meić
Light design: Miljenko Bengez
Co-production: Banana Guerilla

This production primarily focuses on the emptiness of the notion of political theatre and the possibilities of its replenishing. Taking as its starting point the interviews in which Condoleeza Rice explains the reasons she gave up a career of a pianist and turned to international politics, Vanessa Redgrave describes the state of exception and the huge mass of people who have been placed outside of legislative rule. We attempt to map the space in which the performativity of political speech (is always) cancelled.

The project plans the staging of five productions by Croatian, Russian, Egiptian and Macedonian directors, including nine countries and ten institutions (among them Theater &TD).

To approach the topic of memory via a process intrinsic to it – forgetting – suggests two possibilities of entering this complex subject matter: to think in terms of vacuity, blankness, deletion, and further on, mental fissures and emotional crack-ups, and on the other hand, to treat the fact that we are able to forget, and that we do forget whether we choose to or not, as a faculty which opens upon numerous possibilities of creating, re-building the present from whatever leftovers of the past we can muster up at any moment and which enables us to endlessly traverse the bifurcations of Borgesian labyrinths as an attitude towards the present. The point is to keep the door which leads to a world of possibilities open. Because of that our methodology of work as well as the representative mode in which the project operates can be described as a notebook, a collection of performance notes and/or notes for a performance. A note is a reminder, a souvenir of some past situation, without an exposition yet open to all possible re-interpretations and fictionalizations, a marker of the possibility of a perpetual divergence.

Sunday, 10.12., 20:00, Theater &TD, Zagreb

Nataša Rajković, Bobo Jelč
Other Side

Actors: Ksenija Marinković, Krešimir Mikić, Jadranka Đokić, Nikša Butijer

Stage manager: Maja Levanić

The performance Other Side is a result of long and specific research work of Bobo Jelčić and Nataša Rajković with four actors. The story of the performance is common as always in the work of Bobo and Nataša: they are trying to catch a subtle rhythm and atmosphere of everyday living problems and to analyse position of everyday people and their psychological and sociological capacities. On the other side, the performance is questing the meaning of theatrical convention and theatrical elements playing with levels of acting and performing, shaping content and text during the work.
The story is follows one women and the moment in her life in which she is losing her strength, fighting against her own demons and imperfection. The people around her have their own stories and they want to tell them too.

We are here, on a meadow, lighted by distant street lights, on the location of a two-year association of two people, sometimes three, and two animals, sometimes three, from the winter of 2003 until the winter of 2005, from 5.15, 5.30 a.m., daily, regardless of weather conditions, illness is not allowed. Since 2005, there has been one, accompanied by a being which does not speak, still frantically singing and dancing, circling the meadow, trying to outrun the Sun, and transforming the meadow into the Walden Pond, one-hour walks through the meadow to the life in the forest.
"By Meritorious topic I mean any reason for artistic action that is the result of the so-called constructive action in the community of mankind." D.B. Indoš
